It's Never too Late to Celebrate a Birthday

Denise took me to lunch today for my birthday!  You might ask ...for this year or last?  It's for my last birthday .... I am still the same age right?  Things get busy in the summer and Denise struggles with her health and has had multiple surgeries in the past few months.  I appreciate her remembering and wanting to take me even though she didn't need to.  She called me before my birthday and wished me Happy Birthday...that was good.  I know she remembers me and thinks of me like I do her.  I feel bad that we don't see each other more often. (life gets busier)  I am glad that we do try to at least celebrate our birthdays by going out to lunch.  I enjoy those yearly visits.

Denise is a great example of why visiting teaching is important.  She was my visiting teacher when I first moved to Roy.  It was then that we became dear friends.  We have shared so much over the years.  I admire Denise's strength.  She has had some tough challenges but keeps doing the right things.  Oh I love my friend Denise!  I hope that we will be able to continue celebrating our birthdays for many more years!  Birthdays are Good! (wink)

Up Up & Away.........

Last year Larry and I each got a voucher from the airlines since we were willing to give up our seats on a flight that was over booked.  They were good for a year and I barely made the dead line on using mine. (we were going to use Larry's to go to California but since his foot was still sore we just lost it since we didn't use it)  I tried using mine earlier to go visit my friend Susan but between 3 of us trying to coordinate dates I wasn't able to make it when the first date was set.  Kathy ended up going by herself.  This time I knew I had to get with Susan myself if I was going to go visit her and so that's what I did. We came up with a date that would work for us both.  We were hoping it would work for Kathy also and she had things worked out so it would....only problem was that she flies standby and wasn't able to get a flight out of SLC. (sad)

It was stressful for a few weeks before I actually went.  Kathy wanted me to change the date for a month out so the weather would be better.  I knew I couldn't because of the deadline on the voucher.  I was also stressed not knowing if Kathy and I were getting a hotel for the first night or if she was going to make it and I would be stuck alone in the hotel.  It was a crazy week or so until I finally decided I was just going to do what I needed to.  I would get myself to Susan's apartment and if Kathy came she could do the same.  That way Susan wouldn't have to worry about running around to pick us up.

While Kathy and I were waiting for the next flights we were having a bagel and visiting when I looked up and saw my sister and niece.  We were all surprised and thought it was funny.  Had we not been sitting where we were I don't think I would have noticed them walking by to get to their gate.  It was a nice surprise.

Just before landing in Houston the pilot got on the speaker and told us that as a precaution we would be having an emergency team escort us to our gate.  The plane had some electrical problems and I guess they were concerned about having a fire.  No worries.....for 20 minutes or more we waited and I breathed deeply trying to smell anything different.  The gal on the other side of the isle and I laughed and said we really didn't need to know that.  My mind thought things all by itself like....hmmmmm I might die and it will be from burning up which I had never thought about before.  I wasn't scared and just thought I would crouch down and it would only be moments and I'd be gone.  Funny...how the brain just thinks so fast and involuntarily.  Everything turned out fine...no fires!  Soon I was boarded again headed to Baltimore.  All my flights were good...as far a weather goes.

I took a shuttle from the airport and it turned out to be nice and easy.  The driver came in the airport to get me and then took me right to Susan's.  I didn't mind paying the $$$ at all....I thought it was well worth it.  In fact, I ended up using the same service to take me back to the airport so Susan wouldn't have to spend her time and gas taking me. (I would have had to sent her the $$$ for gas because I know she wouldn't take it...this way I didn't have to worry about it)

I saw Kathy at the airport since she was trying to catch a flight out.  We joked about getting a picture taken hoping it wouldn't be our only one ..... it was our only one.

It was wonderful seeing Susan.  Susan is serving a LDS Temple Mission at the Washington DC Temple for a year.  It was so much fun walking in her path for a few days and seeing what a mission is all about.  I loved feeling the spirit so much.  I went with her to the Temple on Saturday since she had to work.  My plan was go to the 12:00 endowment and then turn around and go to the 2:30 endowment so that I could see both movies.  Susan wanted to talk to me about them.  I missed the 2:30 session because I ran into a lady that has parents that live in my ward and we were talking.  Actually that isn't why I missed the session...the real reason is that the first session took longer because of people going through for themselves and waiting on an older man. (he left and came back)  Since I missed the session I decide to go and do some initiatory.  I love doing initiatory....I just feel so loved and feel the spirit with every name.  When I got through I went and sat outside the Chapel for a few minutes and listened to the music while I read the scriptures for a while.  I then headed down to the baptistery where Susan was working.  She got through about the time I got there and so we left.  It was such an awesome day being in the Temple.  I absolutely love the Temple and feeling the Spirit of God!
We decided to go out for dinner and ended up at Ruby Tuesdays.  Susan had told me that she has missed laughing.  She is happy and has fun but hasn't really laughed a lot.  So I decided to find things to make her laugh.  I wanted to help her out!  While visiting the potty I noticed the cutouts in the counter where you put your garbage.  I wondered.....will our heads fit in those holes?  I moved the garbage can and crawled under.....my head fit!  So we moved the other garbage so Susan could pop up through the other hole.  A waitress that was also visiting the potty gladly took our picture!  That started a lot of laughter and got us looking for more photo opts. We had a great time and even went back to Ruby Tuesdays to get a few more pics so Susan could send them to her grands on instagram.  We laughed and made others laugh too.  We also scared a poor lady that was using the restroom.  She went to wash her hands and was looking down and when she finally looked up she saw me and screamed while she jumped backwards and instead of washing she took her daughter out and left. haha  It was a fun night.....and it didn't end until morning.  We stayed up until Midnight or after every night I was there.  It was a slumber party every night....not much sleep.

On Sunday we enjoyed visiting more and we went to the visitors center which is so awesome.  Liz Lemmon Swindle had a display there that was beautiful of the Saviors life.  Again...the Spirit was felt and enjoyed.  Church was different since there aren't any children.  I enjoyed partaking of the Sacrament and hearing those missionaries say the prayers.  There were tears during the prayers because they understand!  I can't remember if that night we played games with other missionaries or watched a show with some of the sisters....we did both at different times.
Monday is "P" day and we decided to go with a few of the sisters to the Smithsonian Institution...National Zoo.  We went to see the new baby panda...which we did see because there is a camera on it.  She was out of sight and ended up taking a nap while we were there.  It didn't matter we still enjoyed ourselves.  It's been a long time since I have been to the Zoo.  Susan and the Gorilla had a moment and I enjoyed watching a seal chase a paper ball and little girl was throwing around.  It was a fun day.
On Monday Nights the missionaries have a Hail and Farewell.  They welcome the new missionaries and introduce them and say good bye to those going home.  They got four new couples and they all took a few minutes to introduce themselves.  I enjoyed hearing about them.  I really enjoyed hearing some of the experiences of the two couples going home.  It really makes me excited to serve one day.  I would really like a Temple Mission but seriously doubt I will get my way but even so I know I will enjoy serving a mission some day.

We we got back to Susan's apartment instead of going to bed we made more memories with the camera.  I think we were pretty creative, especially with the lamp shades.  Again we laughed an played until midnight....but it was fun!
The time went fast.  We played games. We watched Frozen.  We went to the Temple a few times.  (I talked Susan into going on Tuesday before she had to work and before I had to fly home.)  We laughed and talked and strengthened our friendship.  It was a few days well spent.

I didn't choose to go to any of the visitor attractions in DC.  I just wanted to see my friend and visit with her.  As I was sitting in the Temple Tuesday morning the thought came to my mind that I was at the best place I could be while visiting DC.  I smiled...because I agreed!

I'd like to say the flight home was smooth without problems but that wouldn't be true.  We were late getting out of Baltimore because an Oxygen Mask had came down on the previous flight of the plane I was boarding.  They needed to fix it before we could take off.  When I boarded the plane I found out the seat I was assigned to was the one that had the problem.  I laughed but didn't worry.  The pilot thought we could make of for the lost time but was rerouted because of weather and many passengers on the plane missed their connecting flights including me.  My plane was still there but wouldn't open the doors for me or the others needing to get on it.  They just backed up and left us standing there watching.  We assume they gave our seats up.  That put me in a long line at the service desk looking for another flight home.  I was able to get one for the following day which meant I was staying in Houston.  I heard others talking about how the hotels were booked and there wasn't anywhere they could go.  I asked the gal helping me if they had vouchers and would put me up for the night.  Because my plane had the oxygen mask repaired I was able to get set up in a Motel just out of town.  I stayed in a Super 8 in "Bumble".  It wasn't the the nicest place around but it had a bed (in fact it had 2 beds) and a shower.  I had my luggage and so things were good.  The airlines also gave me vouchers for taxi's to and from the motel and a few for food.  I felt like I was taken care of.

The flight home was good.  I sat by a nice couple who were going to Logan for their brother in laws funeral. (sad)  We talked the whole flight and ended up leaving each other with a hug and they each kissed my cheek.

I'm always happy to walk back into my home and life however I would go again tomorrow if the opportunity arose.  I like not having responsibilities every now and then....it's a bit rewarding.

Friday

I have some of the CUTEST Grands!!!

Tuesday

It's Official....Kamryn is a Ropelato

Oh Happy, Joyful, Marvelous, Wonderful Day!  (just a minute I need to wipe my tears)  Today little Miss Kamryn was adopted by my Kevin...her Daddy!  I can't even describe how wonderful this actually was....it reminded me a lot of when she was "sealed" to Kevin and her mommy on their wedding day.  This actually surprised me that I could feel the same joy and spirit of this legal action.  It was awesome to say the least.  It was neat having the support of great families.  I loved watching Kevin accept this responsibility which he has since he first started dating cute Julie.  I loved hearing Julie give that trust to Kevin.  But most of all I loved the excitement in little Kamryn.  She was excited to be adopted by her daddy so she could be his.  What a darling family....all Ropelato's now and forever!

We are celebrating tonight because that's what Ropelato's and Dunkley's too....We Celebrate Life!

Sunday

Sunday with the Family

Sundays are my favorite days of week since that is the day that the married kids come home and bring my cute grands.  I love having everyone together.  I love watching everyone laugh and share stories with each other.  I love how we all support each other.  I love how the grands run to each other and embrace in hugs when they see each other.  I love to that the grands love doing Family Home Evening together.  I love that Larry usually has an idea for a lesson because we aren't usually too prepared...but they happen and that is what is most important.

Tonight we wrote letters  to my cute niece, Alexi.  Alexi is serving in Reno and has wrote a few times and so Larry thought it would be good for all of us to send her a note.  I loved when we use to do this for our boys when they were serving.  The letters that are shared with me make me smile.  I know Alexi will be smiling as she opens and reads them too.

My family all make me smile.  They are my favorite people...the ones I pray the most for....the ones I think of the most often....the ones that have brought the most joy in my life....the ones that have helped me find my purpose in life.  Oh.....I love my family most!

Saturday

We are put here to bless each other!

Tanna set this dinner date up.  She told me she needed to talk and things worked out so we were able to.  It's funny how over the years friendships grow and are strengthened when we need them to be.  Over the past several years we have become closer to this cute couple and their family.  We love them to pieces.  We continue to have more in common with them.  Being the older couple makes it possible for the Monson's to lean on us.....for that reason I am thankful that we have had the experiences we have so that we can share what we've learned with others as they go through their own similar experiences.  I think we are all put in the right place at the right time to help others and to also receive the help we need.  It's part of Heavenly Father's wonderful plan of happiness!

It's been fun watching the Monson's grow in the Gospel.  They are good people with strong testimonies and a lot of love for one another.  It's fun listening to their experiences as Eric serves as Bishop.  I remember when a leader in our Church told one of our leaders that Eric was missing out on some callings because of his facial hair.  Eric was told about that and shaved and has been a leader ever since.  Their family will be blessed for all the efforts of Tanna and Eric.  Their faith is strong and will carry them through the "bump in their road" at this time.  Oh how I love this couple!

Friday

Great Valentine Present!

WOW.....Jaydan is 23 years old today!  What a joy this boy has always been.  I always said that Valentines Day was the perfect day for Jaydan to be born because he has always been such a sweetheart!!!

Jaydan is one happy kid!  I can't even remember the last time I saw Jaydan sad or angry.  He is just a mellow, happy go lucky guy.  He is always joking and laughing and so fun to be around.  Jaydan is really kind to Kimleighel and Jared.  He is a wonderful "big" brother to them.  Jaydan is a terrific son and adds so much to our family.

Jaydan has always been a pretty easy kid.  I could take him anywhere with me and enjoyed having him around.  He doesn't demand much attention but enjoys it when we give it to him.  He is dependable and pretty self reliant.  Jaydan seldom asks for help with anything.  He is happy and positive and knows how to make others laugh and feel loved.

I am very thankful for this boy of mine....my little valentine! ♥

Thursday

Celebrating Jaydan

Jaydan preferred to go to dinner with Larry and I on a day other than his birthday.  Valentine's Day is a busy day to try and go to dinner and he chose to go a day early.  It was nice and we didn't have to wait longer than about 10 minutes.

Jaydan chose to go to Ruby River.  Tonya and Mark were there with some friends from work and so we visited with them for a minute or so.  They had finished their meals when I first saw them as I came in. They were in the parking lot still visiting when we were done.☺ It was nice running into them...we all love them!

It was fun listening to Jaydan talk to us at dinner.  He laughs a lot and has a lot to say.  I am glad that he likes sharing with us.  Jaydan has an endless pit in his stomach. The kid can put away a lot of food and always does.  I sure do love this kid of mine.  Jaydan makes me smile! ☺

Lunch with a Fun Bunch

I didn't know this when I suggested that we meet for lunch but I read that February 13th is Galantines, a day to celebrate lady friends!  That is exactly what we did!  We celebrated our friendships.

I love these friends and had I not suggested a get together Jodi would have.  She was thinking about having a lunch on this very day at the same place I suggested.  I'm not sure if I have mentioned before how similar Jodi and I are....we even think a like!  We tease that we were twins separated at birth. Whatever the case might be we are really great friends now.  I am so glad that we found each other...the timing has been perfect.  Getting to know the other gals has been a true blessing too.  They each teach me so much and make me realize how much Heavenly Father loves me and each of us!

I wasn't going to have a treat until Carla said I would love one....that's all the persuasion it took....I had a brownie bite and it was delicious....worth every single calorie! (like I worry about calories...I should but I don't)  I love this Fun Bunch of ladies who make me laugh, smile and feel good about myself!

Wednesday

Sweetheart Dinner

Our Ward decided to have a dinner for the adults to celebrate Valentines.  It was a fun event and the cultural hall was full.  I believe more tables were added to accommodate everyone.  It was a nice turn out.  Larry and I sat with the Wards and then the Hodson's and Turners joined us along with their good neighbor.

Since we were in the back we were some of the last to get our food which wasn't a good thing.  It appeared that they were out of rolls and meat but after we had sat back down someone brought more out from the kitchen.  Since the main course seemed to be short in supply our table decided to grab a dessert  when we got our meal. ☺
There were a few games played.  One was like the Newlywed Game to see how well you knew you spouse.  Larry and I opted out with the games since last time we were involved in something like this it didn't go over too well. (actually it was a dating panel we were on....I will stop there!) Everyone seemed to have a good time and it's clear that most couples don't really know each other that well. ☺  Then there were a few minute to win it games that were fun.  All in all the might went well and we had a good time!  I love my sweetie!

Tuesday

Be Mine?

When I came home today right by me garage door were these pretty flowers!  I smiled!  I can't help but smile every time my sweetie sends me flowers.  I never get tired of them and I am always surprised.  These are for Valentines and I laughed out loud when I read the note....Will you be my valentine?????? Please??? Larry.  I text him after reading the note with a YES!!!!  Such a simple little thing but very meaningful to me.

Larry told me he went the cheap route this time because he knew I wouldn't care.  He is right....these meant as much to me as a dozen roses!  We talked about all the years he sent me roses....I bet I have received more roses than most.  I got them every month for years...and even though they came every month I was still surprised and appreciated them very much.  Larry says I Love You through flowers!

I love my Valentine!  The guy makes me laugh and smile and feel so loved.

***a little memory of mine about valentines.  Larry and I met in a Courtship and Marriage class at Weber State.  On Valentines day when we went to class on each of our desks was a valentine with someone's name on it.  We were suppose to write that person a Valentine greeting.  I remember having the guy with the strange last name. (Ropelato)  Years later I came across the Valentine given to me on that same day.....it was from the guy with the strange last name! (which was also my last name then)  ☻  I'm sure they were placed on the desks randomly but it worked out great for us!!!

Happy Birthday Mom and Linda

This is about the first time I can remember taking my mom to lunch for her birthday.  I'm not sure why it hasn't happened before.  I always go see her on her birthday but have never gone out.  I guess since she took Susan and I for our birthdays on Sevim's (Linda's mom who has passed) birthday I thought it was only fair that her and Linda get treated for their birthdays since they are both February babies.

We had a good time and a great lunch.  Susan was sick and didn't feel up to coming and we missed her.  It's fun talking about the "good old days".  It seems weird that even though many years have come and gone we really aren't much different than those earlier days.  We are kinder and wiser but basically the same.  I really do enjoy life and the simple things that make it nice.

Already?

Monday

Stay-Cation

Last Year when we took the family to Disneyland Larry and I agreed to give up our seats on the Airplane for some free vouchers.  We each received a $500 voucher for waiting a few hours to fly home.  At first we were going to use it to go to Hawaii and even had the condo reserved but we changed our minds and decided to go to California instead. (pretty sure it wasn't a coincident)  We got our flights and were excited about going.  When Larry's Achilles popped  January first we thought...Ummm that is why we changed plans...he wouldn't be in good enough shape to travel that far.  Well the truth is he wasn't in good enough shape to even go to California and so we didn't.  We just didn't show up for our flight.  I was a little bit sad at first but really glad we stayed here.  Larry suggested we have a stay-cation which I really didn't think was necessary but agreed to it anyway.

We had a great time and I learned that Larry is more handicapped than I thought. We stayed at the Ogden Hilton at the Junction.  It was so new you could smell the newness.  As close as it was to the Movie Theater it wore Larry out walking across the street to it.  He just got a walking boot but still needs one crutch because he can't put all his weight on his foot yet.  It was me walking a few steps  ahead of Larry...usually it is him walking faster than me and I always need to grab his arm to remind him to walk with me.  (I tried slowing down....I should have tried limping a little too and I might have been able to hold back better)  We went to a few movies...one on Friday and one on Saturday. We went to LaFerrovia's, we got take out from Tailgaters and went to the Roof Saturday Evening. (the kids gave us a gift card for Christmas)  It was all enjoyable and relaxing.  WAIT....it wasn't all relaxing.  I had to drive and it was really raining on Saturday when we went to the Roof in SLC.  I hate driving at night with good weather and I kind of freaked out driving back to the Hotel.  The glare made it so I couldn't see the lines on the road and I wasn't sure I was in my own lane.  Larry was great about it and reassured me I was doing good.  Boy, I appreciate Larry driving when we go out.  I am really glad I wasn't in CA driving around unfamiliar roads.  The rest of our little vacation was relaxing.....no laundry to do, no beds to make, no dinner to prepare, no cleaning to do, nothing but enjoy my hubby.  That too isn't completely true....I drove us around, picked up the take out, and brought in the suitcase....again a few things that make me appreciate my healthy hubby more.

I hope this is something that our kids will take time to do every now and then.  To get away from their cares and just enjoy the love of their life.  It was very thoughtful of Larry to have a Stay-cation since we weren't able to go on our Vacation.  It wasn't as much about him  as it was about me.  He did it for me so I could have a break....I appreciate his thoughtfulness.  I love Larry!

Thursday

OUCH!!!

I was driving up 5600 this morning headed to the gym with my friend.  There were a line of cars headed east and so the traffic was slow but steady.  Out of no where and without any warning my car jumped forward just like when you ride the bumper cars at Lagoon....I had been bumped.  I worried about hitting the car in front of me but managed not to.  I couldn't believe I had just been hit!  I looked at my friend as I made my way to the curb and told her we wouldn't make it to the gym.  I was just hoping we would make it home in time to shower and get ready for bowling.  I felt bad for the gal that hit me.  She was headed to work and because she wasn't paying attention for just one second her day plans were altered.  Her car buckled...I think it must have went under mine a bit....her car was totaled.  Mine just had a few cracks in the bumper...which kind of surprised me really.  It was a pretty good hit and I was expecting a big dent but grateful only my bumper was damaged.

The gal needed to borrow my phone charger and so she got in my car for a few minutes.  She smelled good and was very nice.  She knew it was completely her fault and was just sad that she was going to get a ticket and have to get a new car.....she's not sure how she will afford either.  I felt bad for her.  She kept apologizing and I just told her it was okay...I knew she didn't do this on purpose.  I had to laugh though when I noticed the song on the radio.  It was a song about this being the best day....I drew her attention to the song and said probably not for you huh?

The police got the paper work finished just before 8:00 am which was good because that would barely give Carla and I time to go home and shower and be ready to go bowling.  The line of cars lessened by the time we finished.  That is a busy, busy road.

Since I am trying to be kinder this year and find more opportunities to brighten others days the thought keeps coming to my mind that I should do something for the gal that rear ended me.  I think I will drop off something on her porch this week or next.  Maybe a little act of kindness will make her feel a little better.

Tuesday

I look like a Candy Cane

First thing Kimi said to me this afternoon was: "You look like a Candy Cane". ☺  I thought I looked like summer....but delicious works for me. (she said that too)

Tonya and I met today for lunch to discuss the shower we are going to throw for Kelsi.  We ate and visited and were done eating before we mentioned the shower. ☺  I love this sister/friend of mine.  We have so many great memories together and I can always count on her for anything.  She is just the sweetest of sweets. (I think the delicious candy cane got to me)  I wish we had more time together but the time we do get is always good.

My kids all love Aunt Tonya too.  They might use the title "Aunt" with a few others but not all their Aunts....they have always referred to Tonya as Aunt Tonya.  I love it!  Her kids have always been the same with me....I am Aunt Dawn!  I have always loved that title!  I love sharing so much with this girl.  What a blessing our friendship has always been.  Tonya is probably my first friend that I chose as family.  Since then I have added a few more friends to my family.  Thank Goodness for Family & Friends!

Saturday

Zip-pity Do-dah

Ummmmm....Kerry....You Tower the Rest of Us! ☻

We had a great time with Kellie and Kerry tonight.  A great way to start off a new month.  I was sitting at Jared's basketball game and Kerry was reffing and I got the thought that we should all go out.  I text Kellie and Larry and they liked the idea.  Woo Hoo we made it happen!

These two are great friends.  Larry has known them since high school but I met them when Justin and Kyle were young friends.  I have always admired the Cooke's....they're just good people.  They are very thoughtful of others and fun.  We do a lot of laughing when we are together. (which isn't often enough...but better than nothing)  Kerry comes up with the funniest sayings and is so mellow and a "I don't care" kind of guy.  Kellie is concerned about everyone and everything.  She's very caring and thoughtful.  They make a great pair!  It's funny how different they are yet how good they are together..where as Larry and I are more like two peas in a pod and still good together.  I guess the main thing that matters is one's believes and goals.  I think as long as those things are similar couples can make things work out.

We talked about Hawaii....I bet the Cooke's will be there soon.  Larry and I have plans of going in the fall but I think we will be cancelling them because of Larry's injury.....we need to wait and build up vacation days again and let the guy mend.  This injury is one that takes time.  We made a few too many plans this year and have to make a few adjustments. (since his injury) In fact, we just cancelled our plans of going to CA next weekend. We got free airline vouchers last year and we were planning on going to CA with them but Larry just isn't feeling good enough to walk as much as he would need to if we went.  He also wouldn't be able to drive and I surely don't want to....so we planned a "stay-cation".  It seriously doesn't matter to me....I was looking forward to Disneyland but it wouldn't be as fun with Larry out of commission and hurting.  I would be okay with just staying home but our "stay-cation" will be fun!
